For safety, insurance, and legal compliance, only approved drivers are permitted to drive the car during a Drive mate booking. By default, this is the guest who made the booking.

Adding an additional driver

If you’d like someone else to help with the driving during your booking, you can request to add an additional driver. To keep everyone safe and ensure compliance with Australian regulations and Drive mate policies, please follow these steps:

Eligibility & verification

  • The additional driver must be a registered and fully verified Drive mate user.

  • Must hold a valid driver’s licence recognised in Australia.

  • Unverified or unapproved drivers are not covered under any protection or insurance policies.

How much does it cost to add a driver?

Adding an additional driver is a paid service. A fee of $10 per day, per additional driver applies, and this fee ensures that all approved drivers are covered under Drive mate's protection policies.

When can I add an additional driver?

To make sure your additional driver is approved and covered, please follow these guidelines:

  • Submit your request before your trip starts, or during the active booking period.

  • Requests made on the trip end date (drop-off day) are generally not accepted, as protection coverage cannot be applied retrospectively.

How to add a driver

Please contact Drive mate support and provide the following:

  • Full Name

  • Phone Number

  • Email Address

  • Driver’s licence details

  • Passport (if applicable)

The additional driver must not drive the car until the profile of the additional driver has been fully verified and a written approval is confirmed by Drive mate.

Responsibility & liability

The primary guest who booked the car remains fully responsible for the following:

  • The condition of the car

  • Any damage, loss, or claims

  • The applicable excess in the event of an incident

This applies regardless of who was driving at the time.

Important compliance notes

Allowing an unapproved person to drive may result in the following:

  • Breach Drive mate's Terms of Service

  • Void protection coverage

  • Result in full financial liability for damages or losses

  • Approval is not guaranteed and may be declined based on verification or risk checks

  • Limits on the number of additional drivers may apply
