Device Installation Instructions
Use this step by step guide to set up the devices you've received from Drive mate.
Primary GPS Installation
Step 1: Plug in the GPS Tracker
The GPS tracker records the distance driven and locates your car. It’s a small black device with a port on one end.
Before you plug it in:
Record the Primary GPS Serial Number: Note the serial number of the Primary GPS device (a 6-digit number) along with the car registration number for future reference.
Ensure your car is turned off.
Locate your car’s diagnostic port, usually found under the dashboard, between the steering wheel and pedals. For your specific make and model, try searching online (e.g., Google "Toyota Corolla diagnostic port").
Plugging it in:
Insert the GPS tracker into the diagnostic port. Make sure it fits securely.
If it doesn’t fit securely, use the provided extension cable, or unclip the port from its bracket by pushing it backward until it pops out.
For a visual guide, watch our how-to video. The video shows how to plug a GPS tracker into a diagnostic port; you can directly plug the tracker into the port or use the extension cable.
Step 2: Check if the GPS Tracker is Working
Turn on your car:
The lights on the GPS tracker should start flashing.
If the lights don’t flash, double-check that the GPS is securely connected to the port.
Verify the connection in the Drive mate app:
Open the app, go to Cars, and select Manage Access.
It may take up to 30 minutes for the location to update. If it doesn’t show immediately, try again later.
Step 3: Secure the GPS Tracker
Once you’ve confirmed that it’s working, secure the tracker in place:
Use cable ties, rubber bands, tape, or hair ties if needed to keep it secure.
Conceal the device behind a panel so it’s out of sight and not obstructing anything.
Step 4: Take a photo of the GPS in place:
Take a photo of the installed GPS tracker.
Send the photo to us. This helps us verify its location if troubleshooting is needed in the future.
Secondary GPS Installation
Step 1: Install the Secondary GPS
The Secondary GPS is designed to help locate your car in the event of theft.
Record the Secondary GPS Serial Number:
Note the serial number of the Secondary GPS device (a 6-digit number) along with the car registration number for future reference.
Insert the Batteries:
Use a screwdriver to remove the back cover of the GPS device.
Insert the provided AA or AAA batteries into the device, ensuring correct polarity.
Replace the cover and secure it with the screwdriver.
Step 2: Secure the GPS Tracker
Find a Concealed Location in the Car:
Choose a hidden spot within the car that’s not easily accessible. Good locations include the trunk behind a panel or under the rear passenger seat.
Ensure the spot allows the device to communicate with the network as needed.
Secure the Device:
Use cable ties, rubber bands, tape, or hair ties to hold the device in place.
Step 3: Take a Photo of the Installed GPS:
Photograph the device in its hidden location.
Send the photo to us to help verify its placement, which can assist in troubleshooting if necessary.
Lockbox Installation Instructions
Step 1: Record the Lockbox Serial Number
Note the lockbox serial number and match it with the car registration for future reference.
Step 2: Position the Lockbox
If hanging the lockbox on the vehicle:
Lower the front passenger window halfway.
Hook the lockbox bracket over the edge of the window.
Roll the window back up so the lockbox is securely held in place.
If placing the lockbox on your property:
Log in to the app, go to Cars, and select Listing.
Select Instructions and press the button to generate a shackle code under Lockbox instructions.
Enter the code to open the lockbox and test that it can open and close properly.
Update the Lockbox location in the app so guests know where to find it.
Step 3: Place the Key in the Lockbox
Prepare the Key:
Remove any key rings or fobs from your spare key. If you need to store a garage fob and key together, use a rubber band to secure them.
Place the Key in the Lockbox:
Open the app, go back to Cars, and enter the lockbox code.
Place the key inside the lockbox, close it, and ensure it’s securely shut. If it doesn’t close, check for any obstructions.
Adjust for Larger Keys:
If the lockbox contains a grey key insert and your key doesn’t fit, simply pull out the insert and place the key directly inside.
Step 4: Troubleshoot Unresponsive Lockbox (If required)
If the lockbox doesn’t respond, it may be in sleep mode:
Insert a credit card-sized card into the slot at the bottom of the lockbox.
Listen for a beep to indicate that the lockbox is active.
Enter the code again to open the lockbox.
