This guide walks you through installing and setting up three types of devices provided by Drive Mate:
Primary GPS Tracker – Records trip data and location.
Secondary GPS Tracker – Helps locate the car in case of theft.
Lockbox – Stores your spare key securely for guest access.
Primary GPS Tracker (Black device)
The Primary GPS plugs into your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic (OBD) port and collects data such as distance driven and location.
Step 1: Locate and Install the GPS Tracker
Turn off your car
Record the GPS serial number.
Find the 6-digit serial number on the device.
Write it down along with your vehicle’s registration number for future reference.
Locate your car's diagnostic (OBD) port.
Usually found below the dashboard near the steering wheel.
If you’re unsure, search online for your vehicle make and model (e.g., “Toyota Corolla OBD port location”).
Plug in the tracker.
Insert the tracker directly into the OBD port until it’s securely in place.
If it’s loose:
Use the included extension cable, or
Unclip the port and push it back slightly to secure the connection.
Step 2: Confirm the GPS Is Working
Turn on your car.
Check the tracker lights.
Flashing lights mean the device is working.
No lights? Recheck the connection.
Open the Drive mate app.
Go to Listings → Swipe left on your car → Tap Manage Access.
Wait up to 30 minutes for the tracker to appear.
If the location doesn’t show:
Refresh the app and check again later.
If it still doesn't show, contact support.
Step 3: Secure the Tracker
Use cable ties or fasteners to hold the tracker in place.
Conceal it behind a panel away from moving parts or foot pedals.
Step 4: Submit a Photo
Take a photo of the installed tracker in its final position.
Send the photo to Drive mate for verification and future troubleshooting.
Secondary GPS Tracker (Battery-powered)
The Secondary GPS helps track your car if the Primary GPS is tampered with or removed.
Step 1: Prepare the Device
Record the GPS serial number.
Write down the 6-digit number and match it with your vehicle registration.
Insert the batteries.
Use a screwdriver to open the back cover.
Insert the provided AA or AAA batteries (check the correct polarity).
Replace and secure the cover.
Step 2: Place and Secure the Tracker
Choose a hidden location
Ideal spots include behind a panel, in the trunk, or under the rear seat.
Avoid locations that block signals.
Secure the tracker.
Use cable ties or tape to hold the tracker in place.
Ensure it doesn’t move around while driving.
Step 3: Submit a Photo
Take a clear photo of the GPS device in its hidden location.
Send the photo to Drive mate for verification and support.
Lockbox Installation
The lockbox stores your spare key for guests. You can attach it to your car or place it securely on your property.
Step 1: Record the Lockbox Serial Number
Locate the serial number printed on the back or side of the lockbox.
Write it down and match it with your car’s registration number for future reference.
Step 2: Choose Where to Install the Lockbox
Option A: Attach to Your Car
Lower the front passenger window halfway.
Hook the lockbox bracket over the window edge.
Roll the window back up so it clamps the lockbox securely in place.
Option B: Place on Your Property
Open the Drive Mate app.
Go to Listings.
Swipe left on your car and tap Manage Access.
Generate the shackle code.
Under Lockbox Instructions, tap Generate Shackle Code.
Copy the code provided by the app.
Manually enter the unlock sequence on the lockbox keypad.
Use this format:
ENT → FUNC → 1 → shackle code → ENT
Example: For code 123456, enter: ENT → FUNC → 1 → 123456 → ENT
Release the shackle.
Press the shackle downward (or against a firm surface) until it clicks and detaches.
Mount the lockbox to a secure, accessible fixture (e.g., pipe, railing, fence post).
Update the lockbox location in the app.
Add clear instructions so guests can easily find it.
Step 3: Add the Key
Prepare the spare key.
Remove any keyrings or accessories.
If you’re including a garage fob, secure it to the key with a rubber band.
Open the lockbox.
Use the same unlock sequence as before.
Open the compartment and place the key inside.
Close the lockbox securely.
If the key doesn’t fit, remove the grey plastic insert inside the box.
Once closed, pull on the shackle to ensure it’s locked properly.
Step 4: Troubleshoot (if needed)
If the lockbox doesn’t respond:
Insert a credit-card-sized object into the slot at the bottom.
This wakes the device from sleep mode.
Wait for a beep sound.
Re-enter the unlock sequence.
If it still doesn’t respond, contact Drive mate support.
