This applies to visitors or travelers who plan to drive using a foreign driver’s license that is not written in English.
Overview
If your driver’s license is not in English, you are required to carry both:
Your original, valid driver’s license, and
An International Driving Permit (IDP)
Both documents must be presented for your profile to be approved and may be required by hosts or local authorities when driving. What is an IDP?
An International Driving Permit (IDP) is an official translation of your national driver’s license into multiple languages.
It is not a replacement for your license.
It must be used together with your original license.
It helps law enforcement and rental platforms verify that you are legally permitted to drive.
Why you need it
Authorities or hosts may not accept a driver’s license they cannot read.
An IDP:
Prevents delays or rejections during ID checks
Ensures compliance with local driving laws
Helps avoid issues at vehicle pickup or roadside checks
What to do
Check your driver’s license language
If your license is fully in English: an IDP is not required.
If your license is in another language: continue to the next step.
Apply for an IDP in your home country
Contact your national licensing authority or automobile association.
Apply before you travel—IDPs are not issued after arrival in a new country.
Carry both documents at all times
Your valid, original driver’s license
Your International Driving Permit (IDP)
Submit both documents (if required)
Some platforms may request digital copies of your license and IDP to verify your profile.
Important Notes
An IDP is not valid on its own. It must be used with your original license.
If you fail to present both documents when requested, you may be denied permission to drive or rent a vehicle.
IDPs are typically valid for one year from the date of issue. Check the expiration before traveling.
